Star of the South will harness strong Bass Strait winds, continuing Gippsland’s role as Victoria’s powerhouse with energy jobs in the region for decades to come.
Proposed project location in Bass Strait off Gippsland
Early feasibility studies for Star of the South were progressed under an exploration licence between 2019 and 2023. Wind, environment, and seabed studies confirm that the project is suitably located and technically feasible.
In May 2024, Star of the South secured an exclusive feasibility licence for a 586 square km area within the Gippsland declared offshore wind area.
The project includes an underground transmission connection and would use existing ports to support construction and operations activities.
A coordinated Commonwealth and State Environmental Impact Assessment is underway to inform government approval decisions. The assessments will be published and open for public review and submissions once completed – building on extensive local consultation since 2017.
Construction can begin only after all approvals and investment are confirmed.
We aim to start generating electricity before 2030 to support the Victorian offshore wind target of 2GW by 2032.
Star of the South was initiated by Australian founders and is being progressed with investment from CIP and Cbus Super.
